It’s good news for Indians in the US. There is no need to wait years for a green card anymore. The process of issuing a green card required for permanent residence will soon be expedited. Policy changes will be made to ensure that the entire process is completed within six months from the date of application. This is good news for foreigners looking for permanent residence in America, especially expatriate Indians. The proposal was unanimously approved by the 25-member US Presidential Advisory Council. If President Joe Biden also approves the proposals, the green card issuance process will accelerate.
It said that necessary steps should be taken to reduce delays in the examination, interview, and issuance of green card applications. The National Visa Center (NVC) has been instructed to expedite the interview process by increasing the number of staff as required by next August. It also proposes to complete the work on work permits, travel documents, and temporary status extensions/amendments within three months. It also recommended that a final decision be made within 45 days on the applications of those who paid $ 2,500 under premium processing. Meanwhile, there are a large number of foreigners who have been waiting for years for a green card with the desire to settle in America. In the case of India, a large number of IT professionals travel to the US on H-1B work visas.
India has the potential to issue a maximum of 226k green cards a year, of which only seven percent is the quota. Thousands of Indians have been waiting for years to get a green card because of this provision. Only 65,452 green cards were issued in 2021 for various reasons. Postponement of interviews has also become commonplace. The problem is thought to be the lack of changes in immigration regulations to cater to the growing population. If the latest proposals are approved by the President, the green card issuance process will be streamlined and thousands of expatriate Indians will benefit.
