Why does Netflix lose subscribers?

Netflix is the American subscription streaming Service Company. Netflix enjoyed a monopoly for more than a decade. People are enjoying the streaming on the OTT platforms in many nations. Whatever news you heard about Netflix becomes history. Now, the situation has changed. The OTT platform giant is losing its own subscribers with each passing day. As per the reports, Netflix lost 200K subscribers in Q1 of 2022 and is expected to lose 200K subscriptions by the end of Q2 in the year 2022. Netflix tanks 37% of its share in the stock market which was the worst after 2004. Netflix has enjoyed a great pandemic and made huge profits during the pandemic. It increased to 36 million subscriptions by the end of 2020 from 16 million during Q1 of 2020.

What are the reasons for Netflix's downfall?

There are some generic reasons like Netflix is facing stiff competition from the competitors and have not streamed quality programmes. But the main reason is the Russian invasion of Ukraine for the downtrend of Netflix. Believe it or not! Russia and Ukraine war indirectly affected Netflix. The management has two reasons for the loss of subscribers. Netflix has increased subscription prices in the US, UK and Canada by two dollars. In general, this is not a big amount for the families to bear for leisure. But here the timing of the management is not good. When the nations are struggling for some necessities because of the war, people have decided to minimize the expenditure on luxuries.

Soon after the price increased, nearly 1.5 million subscriptions were cancelled in the UK. Netflix is an American company that has decided to exit from Russia which starts the war with Ukraine in late January. War and inflation are surely not in anyone’s control but Netflix becomes the first OTT platform victim. Netflix is the only OTT platform service for streaming programmes without any ads and commercials. Now, the management has decided to open its doors for commercial advertisements. People feel the content on Netflix is similar to the television content in 90s. Netflix management has strictly restricted the sharing of passwords. It said that 100 million people watching it are content by sharing passwords among the subscribers.
