Why Financial Action Task Force (FATF) retained two more years of Pakistan in the grey-list? FATF has found that Pakistan involved multiple in strategic anti-money laundering (AML)/combating the financing of terrorism (CFT) deficiencies activities. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been trying to remove Pakistan's name from the FATF list. He blamed India for the FATF grey list in all international forums. Once the nation falls in grey-list it is very difficult to get loans from International Financial institutions for the development projects within the country. Amid all odds, Imran Khan made a secret agreement with Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) which is related to Barelvi religious-political group. Reportedly, TLP has been created by either Pakistan Army or it assists the religious group.
Imran Khan made a risky promise to TLP which benefited many ways. Imran's government wants to stop ongoing violence sponsored by TLP and in return fulfill four promises to TLP. The extremist group was declared as a proscribed organization in April this year for violent protests to force the government to expel the French ambassador over the issue of blasphemous cartoons published in France.
1. Imran Khan agreed
to remove the prohibition on TLP from the list of banned outfits to end the
protests.
2. TLP's top leader and 2300 other activists
are to be released from prison.
3. All the names of
TLP members to be removed from the Terror watch list.
4. Radical outfit allowed to content in elections in 2023. TLP has emerged as the fifth largest party in the 2018 elections.
