When Indians are just recovering from the coronavirus, the country will not be in danger of another form of Norovirus. However, most of the cases are coming from Kerala. Before Kerala is completely out of Covid-19, another new virus is spreading there. Norovirus causes gastrointestinal illness, including inflammation of the lining of the stomach and intestines, severe vomiting, and diarrhea. Thirteen students of a veterinary college in Pokod, Wayanad district, were infected with the norovirus, many of whom were rushed to hospital with vomiting and diarrhea. Norovirus is easily transmitted through close contact with people who have been infected, or by touching contaminated surfaces.
It is surprising that Kerala confirmed the first cases of both coronaviruses in 2020 and norovirus in 2021 in India. There was no reduction in treatment provided. Many of the students' blood samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Alappuzha for testing and many tested positive for the virus. However, the situation is under control and no one needs to worry. Authorities are collecting the health information of veterinary college students. It is advisable to contact them immediately if symptoms appear. The virus is found in animals and is spread through water and food.
People infected with the virus should get enough rest and drink ORS solution and boiled chilled water. Kerala health minister Veena George asked people to be vigilant and issued guidelines after norovirus, a highly contagious stomach bug that causes a range of symptoms, was confirmed in the state’s Wayanad district. In addition to that, Kerala is on alert after 471 dead from Covid19 while Maharashtra records 41 deaths as India registers 11k new covid cases. The government health ministry suggested to people who interact with animals should be more cautious.
