Xi's plan to have a lifetime President for China

Xi Jinping will be re-elected for a third term as General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Chairman of the Central Military Commission, and President. He is the only leader as President to the nation after Mao Zedong in China. Jinping is currently in power for a second term which ends next year. CPC meetings began on Monday to discuss Xi’s third term. These meetings are being held on the occasion of the centenary of the establishment of the CPC. A historic resolution will also be adopted on this occasion. CPC members meet every year to discuss issues and set-right policies in key areas. When Deng Xiaoping was president, rules were made that no leader should take on these responsibilities more than twice. All party leaders over the age of 68 must retire.

However, he acknowledged that their numbers were not enough to defeat Jinping's party, which had become a powerful leader after Mao. In 2018, a constitutional amendment was made to this effect. This paved the way for him to remain in office for the rest of his life. By this, Xi re-writes the history of China. But incumbent Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has announced that 12 of the 25 members of the party's politburo will retire under the 68-year-old retirement rule. The new rule will apply to President but not others. CPC took the decision in closed rooms without knowing even the consent of the people. CPC has defended the decision quoting that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China raises many threats. They created an assumption that strong leaders will protest the nation safely instead of newcomers.

Trouble for India

China ramps up developments along LAC in the recent past and did mock-ups for missile target practice. US media says that China’s PLA is recruiting Tibetans. Reportedly, PLA has conducted 30 days recruitment drive and included 400 Tibetans. It has aimed to deploy one Tibetan from each family. New recruits will be trained by PLA and are likely to be deployed across LAC. On another side, PLA deployed modern weaponry in its arsenal. PLA installed fiber optic cable which is going to be used for speedy communication among the troops at the time wars. CPC's new resolution legitimizes the aggressive actions of the Chinese President giving him the approval to commit more military provocations.
