There have been
reports in the international media that Russia will launch an attack on Ukraine
on the 16th of this month (Wednesday). Earlier, there was a prediction that
Russia could invade Ukraine after Winter Olympics that end on February 20. The
United States of America predicts that Russia may invade Ukraine at any moment.
US President Joe Biden has warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that he will
pay a heavy price if he launches an attack on Ukraine. Reportedly, two leaders
spend more than an hour over the phone and discussed the situation.
If the Russian invasion of Ukraine takes the form of war, the lives of many
people will become miserable.
The United States
has announced it will spend another 3,000 troops to Poland, a neighbor of
Ukraine. They said they would train the Ukrainian army. The United States and
its allies have urged their citizens to leave Ukraine. Russia has said it has
no plans to attack Ukraine, and that the Western media is spreading propaganda.
It seems Russia has surrounded Ukraine on three sides. Russian troops gathered
in Crimea (the nation which was grabbed by Russia in February 2014) to the
south, on the Russian side of the two countries' border, and in Belarus to the
north. Russia did some war exercises for 10 days along with Belarus near the
Ukraine border.
In recent elections, people in Ukraine have
clearly indicated that they see their future in Europe. Russian President Putin
has not digested that Ukraine moving close with Europe and NATO. In 2014,
Russia annexed Crimea, a part of Ukraine, and it is keen not to let the country
become more aligned with Western institutions, chiefly NATO and the European
Union. People welcomed the annexation of Crimea when Russia did eight years
back. But the situation has changed now. But people in Russia can’t digest
Putin’s bureaucracy and dissidence increased among the people. On the other
side, people in Ukraine dared to challenge Russian aggressiveness. Not only two
nations’ entire world would lose if the war takes place between two nations.
