Djokovic's "wild-card" victory over the Australian government

Australian Open, the first grand slam of the year 2022 is scheduled to take place at Melbourne Park, from 17th to 30th January 2022. Novak Djokovic is a Serbian professional tennis player who is currently ranked as world No. 1. His visa was canceled by the government upon arrival for this month’s Australian Open, after determining that the player’s recent Covid-19 infection did not sufficiently meet the requirements for him to be allowed to enter the country unvaccinated. Djokovic has 20 Grand Slam Men’s singles titles including a record of nine Australian Open titles. When he is gearing up to win the 10th one, the Australian govt reacted sharply at Djokovic. Serbian star player arrived in Melbourne last week to compete in the Australian Open.

Djokovic, who landed at Tullamarine Airport in Melbourne, was greeted at the airport by a champion but was stopped at the airport for not taking the vaccine. Also, his visa was revoked, and moved to the Immigration Detention Facility. The Australian government, which has been imposing strict sanctions on foreign travelers for the past two years in the wake of the Covid-19, has faced an extraordinary setback. Djokovic, who challenged the revocation of his visa and detention, received a favorable verdict in an emergency online court on Monday. The court ordered the government to renew his visa and release him immediately from detention. Djokovic spent the weekend in a hotel for visa detainees.

The judge of the Emergency Online Court, which heard the case on Monday, said the government had agreed to withdraw the decision to revoke Djokovic's visa. Also, Djokovic was ordered to be released immediately. Moreover, the orders stated that he should be released within half an hour after his orders. Djokovic was detained after his visa was revoked and moved to a five-story building formerly the Park Hotel. There are also 32 other people stranded in the country due to Australia's strict immigration policies. Some have been detained there for almost a year. It is the defeat of Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison who took the Djokovic visa issue seriously.
