Omicron is in a downtrend in South Africa

Omicron, which is potentially more transmissible, was first discovered in South Africa and has since been detected in several countries. The first B.1.1.529 variant was reported, in South Africa, on November 24th, 2021. Many countries were reacted sharply against South Africa and decided to impose travel restrictions on the African nations. The UK is the first nation that cancels Air travels to South Africa. The country has lifted a midnight curfew after seeing a rapid drop in pandemic cases. As per the officials, 29.7% fewer cases of covid-19 cases were reported in X-mas week when compared with earlier week.


The speedy spreading of Omicron becomes a huge concern to the world. Flights have been canceled and borders restrictions increased worldwide. South African scientists are saying Omicron has caused less illness when compared to Delta, and other variants. Even though the country experienced with huge surge, the death rate in South Africa is stable. As per South African scientists, the period of hospitalization was reduced from 7 days to 3 days with Omicron. World Health Organization (WTO) is still not clear how dangerous that Omicron is. But many countries are still battling with Omicron and continued travel restrictions across the world. 


More than 4,000 flights around the world were canceled on Sunday due to the spread of the Omicron variant. More than half of all flights in the United States have been canceled due to fears of an Omicron outbreak. Due to adverse weather conditions and the increase in cases of coronavirus caused by the Omicron variant, travelers are reluctant to go on holiday trips. 2,400 flights to various countries from the United States were grounded. According to Flight Aware, 11,200 flights around the world were delayed due to the Omicron variant effect.
