Ayodhya to Rafale to Rajya Sabha

Ranjan Gogoi is in news since three days for nominating him to elder house. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha by President Ram Nath Kovind as per BJP government’s request. He is the third Supreme Court of Justice and first to be nominated to Rajya Sabha. Gogoi was retired from CJI November 17^th, 2019. Appointment of former CJIs in statutory posts is not new to nation. Chairman of Green Tribunal and Chairman of National Human Rights Commission are such posts created for former Judges because of their knowledge in subject.

Congress and other opposition parties criticized on Gogoi’s appointment to Rajya Sabha. There is strong reason for Congress remarks on Ranjan Gogoi. How Government selected him to Rajya Sabha not even 6 months after he retired as CJI. It has blamed that Ranjan Gogoi’s series of judgments at the end of his career gave him a chance as Rajya Sabha member. Congress party also raised the sexual harassment against him after his candidature confirmed by BJP. Today, Congress party walked-out and shouted “Shame Shame” slogans when Gogoi taking an oath as Rajya Sabha member.

It blamed that Rajya Sabha offer to Gogoi is quid-pro-quo for his judgments at the end of his career. His judgments on Rafale deal and Ram Mandir in Ayodhya gave lot of political help to BJP. In Rafale deal, he gave clean chit to Modi and ordered criminal contempt proceedings against Rahul for making allegations on Modi. Historic verdict of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya just week before his retirement made BJP happy. There is lot of comments on Gogoi in Social media. Member of Rajya Sabha is inferior position to CJI. His appointment to Rajya Sabha shouldn’t strengthen the judiciary.
