While the Taliban has taken over
the entire Afghanistan, Panjshir is still out of its control. Since the fall of
Kabul on Aug. 15, Panjshir has been the only province to hold out against the
Taliban. National Resistance Forces (NRF) said the fighting occurred on the
western entrance to the valley where the Taliban attacked NRF positions. It
also mentioned that eight Taliban killed and a similar number wounded, while
two members of the NRF forces were wounded. Ahmad Massoud, son of the former
anti-Soviet mujahideen commander Ahmad Shah Massoud, has established himself in
the Panjshir valley with a force of several thousand, made up of local militias
and remnants of army and Special Forces units.
Taliban attacked Panjshir valley after they reached from several directions to the valley on August 30th. As per the sources, the Taliban was defeated by the resistance forces. The National Resistance Front managed to successfully counter the attack and the Taliban ran away. The attack took place near the Khawak Pass as the Taliban attempted to infiltrate the valley. The Taliban has suffered heavy casualties in Andarab districts in the last 24 hours. Ahmad Massoud and Amrullah Saleh have shared the updates using social media. Ahmad Massoud has tweeted that he will not surrender to the Taliban. The fight took place soon after US forces made their final exit from Afghanistan.
Taliban sent hundreds of its fighters to the valley, which is currently the center of the resistance in the war-ravaged country. Anti-Taliban forces have reportedly established themselves in the Panjshir as a stronghold. NRF rejected Taliban claims, saying that it later entered Panjshir valley. People in Panjshir made a complaint that the Taliban had cut their telephone and internet services. The Taliban aimed to prevent Former Vice-President Amrullah Saleh from sharing Twitter messages. The valley lies in Hindu Kush Mountains which is approximately 90 kms from Kabul.
