The United Kingdom came out from the European Union on 31st January 2020 is called Brexit (“British Exit”). UK is the first sovereign nation to the left of the EU. UK was in the severe second wave of coronavirus at the time of leaving from EU. Like other nations, UK’s economy was collapsed due to pandemics. The UK is facing severe manpower shortages in all sectors because of post-Brexit regulations and a stretched labour market. The chronic labour shortage has led to a crisis in supply chains, affecting a lengthening list of products. As usual, the government blamed the pandemic but on the other side of the coin, it is because of Brexit.
The UK has been hit by a shortage of truck drivers which is a serious concern for this summer that made a huge impact on supermarkets, restaurants and other retailers. Assessing the grim situation, the British government will issue thousands of emergency VISAs to foreign truck drivers for not breaking the supply chain. In the aftermath of Brexit, thousands of foreign drivers left the UK since they could no longer work for free visas. As per one research, 1.3 million foreign-born workers had left British land and were yet to return. That makes a lot of impact on UK people in the current scenario.
Despite the government’s repeated pleas not to go for panic buy of fuel, long vehicle queues appeared before petrol pumps in the UK. This is because of shortage of lorry drivers has led to delivery bottlenecks across the country. That leads to closing of some petrol stations and limiting the supply of petrol in other petrol bunks. Not only the transport sector, but various sectors had also previously warned that supplies would run short because of manpower shortage. The government has rejected all calls to solve the problem by issuing short-term visas to truckers and other workers from the EU. The government has announced a temporary visa scheme for 10K lorry drivers and poultry workers. Industry experts predict that UK is short of around 100K heavy vehicle drivers for transportation.
