Chinese President Xi Jinping is working seriously
on a campaign of common prosperity soon after he took charge in 2012. The
Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has made it a priority to end poverty and build a
moderately prosperous society as well. In the name of “common prosperity”, the
Chinese government targets wealthy citizens, entrepreneurs and celebs. Among
all odds, one new book called “Red Roulette” exposes China’s hidden corruption.
Both President Xi and the CCP should answer many questions that arose in the
book. Desmond Shum, author of the book “Red Roulette” is also one of the
victims of the government. There is an opinion that CCP has a strict image of
being intolerant towards corruption but as per the book, the party itself
encourages corrupted persons in top positions in the party.
The author did not leave anyone in Xi family including his sister Qi Qiaoqiao and her husband Deng Jiagui who are the owners of Beijing Central People’s Trust Real Estate Development Corporation Ltd. There is an allegation that Xi daughter Xi Mingzhe who is pursuing graduate degree at Harvard University holds a US Green card. In 2012, Bloomberg revealed that Xi’s extended family had total assets worth $376 million but none of these assets were traced directly to Xi Jinping or his wife, Peng Liyuan. In 2014, New York Times quoted that Xi forced his family to sell their assets. The book mentions that Xi blackmailed corruption charges to dismantle opposition within the party to reach the top position.
China has recently rolled out several measures
that cracked down on businesses with an aim to redistribute wealth and reduce
inequality. Many are likening this to the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s.
There are different opinions on the book but appreciated the courage of the
Shum when the Chinese President is enjoying the most influential position in
the world. Red Roulette has clearly exposed the corruption allegations on Xi
family and at the high levels of CCP. Regulations on Chinese media made it
difficult to highlight the corruption of the Xi family for many years. That’s
the reason Red Roulette creates curiosity to know the unknown issues about CCP
and Xi.
