Two incidents made Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan feel inconvenienced in the recent past. Erdoğan has a long political history not only in Turkey, but he is also one of the key personalities in the world. Muslim nations consider Turkey leader Erdoğan as their elder brother. But recent political developments in Turkey seem not good for him. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has placed Turkey on its grey list over money laundering and terror financing allegations. The second reason is Erdogan bans 10 Western ambassadors including Germany, France, and the United States of America were no longer welcome in Turkey for supporting the release of jailed Turkish businessman and philanthropist Osman Kavala.
A declaration of persona non grata against a diplomat literally means that an individual will be banned from remaining in the country. Turkey President asked the ambassadors should leave the nation if they don’t understand what Turkey is. The move comes a few days after Turkey summoned the ambassadors of the U.S., Germany, France, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden over their joint statement calling for Kavala's release on the fourth year of his detention. The nations feel that merging different cases and creating new ones after a previous acquittal, cast a shadow over respect for democracy.
Earlier this month, FATF said there were serious concerns over Turkey’s financial operations. The ban on Ankara will serve a two-year notice period. FATF warned Turkey in 2019 on measures of freezing assets that were related to terrorism. Turkey has been accused of aiding armed rebels in Syria and supporting Palestinian militants. Putting the Ankara in Grey-list will hit the nation severely on Foreign Direct Investments. Turkey’s friendly nations and Financial Institutions should consider FATF rankings to put their investments in the country. As per an IMF study, a grey-listed nation cut capital inflow by an estimated 7.6% of the country’s GDP. Pakistan is the main victim of Turkey in the grey-list. Islamabad is relay on Ankara on military and trade business. Pakistan has continued to remain on FATF grey-list for two more years.
