One more strange decision from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was imposed on people. North Korea has reportedly banned laughing, grocery shopping, and drinking alcohol as people remember 10 years since Kim Jong II’s death. The new restriction came into effect starting from December 17th onwards for 11 days in the country. Those who failed to follow the restrictions, cases will be booked by police. Pyongyang has organized the 10th death anniversary of Kim Jong-il. Soon after Kim Jong-un took the power, some people believed it would lead to reforms that would benefit North Koreans re-unite.
North Korean officials gave indication to the people not to show any signs of happiness while the nation commemorates Kim Jong II’s death. Special police officer teams have been deployed to ensure that people comply with the rules. There were rumors in the past, those who were found intoxicated during the mourning 11 days period were taken away and never appeared again. Police will also crackdown on those who disturb the mood of mourning. Common people are not allowed to conduct funeral rites in case they coincide during 11 days of the mourning period. The family members of the deceased are not even allowed to cry with a bigger voice.
Kim Jong-il was one of the founding members of North Korea. His period of governance is said to be one of the darkest periods in North Korea history where millions of people died in the 1994-1998 famine. Jong-il was ruled the country from 1994 until his death in 2001. His third and youngest son Kim Jong-un was succeeded Kim Jong-il. There were shocking visuals that appeared on social media when Jong-il died in 2001. People were gathered for the final farewell with a loud cry. Even television anchor communicating the news to the country was in grief and wail at that time. It is ridiculous that people in North Korea have been forced to mourn even after 10 years.
