Over The Top (OTT) platform is getting famous during lockdown period in India. Though the producers made their films for OTT in the form of web series, the importance of OTT has increased after lockdown.
Producers and stars are looking towards OTT for releasing their products. There are some allegations that content in OTT went haywire. The Union government has brought OTT platforms, or video streaming service providers such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and others, under the ambit of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Online video platforms will be subject
to government censors. Indian Government will also regulate online news
platforms. Current affairs content will comes under government scrutiny. There
is question arise now. Was online content not regulated before? There was no
law or autonomous body to govern digital content in India. In Septemer’17, OTT
players have signed a code to govern content on their platforms which was pure
self-regulation. How other countries regulate OTT content? In Singapore OTT
platforms has their media regulatory body which describes specific guidelines
to service providers.
In Australia, OTT platform is governed by the broadcasting services act 1992. Kenya is also implementing regulatory mechanism on online content. Indian government decision on regulating OTT content is falls under debate. Indians are using online content than ever before. There are more than 17 crore OTT platform users across the nation. As per the survey in 2019, 55% of the users prefer to consume content on OTT. 70% of the users consume the content for their mobile phones. 41% opined they prefer DTH or Television at their homes. OTT video streaming will become a 4K crores in Indian market by 2025. Without proper regulation, how such an enormous market remain unregulated.
