When India is slowly returned to normalcy, neighbor Bangladesh is struggling to counter coronavirus. Bangladesh hits record COVID cases amid fears of oxygen crisis. Bangladesh is reeling under scarcity of medical oxygen when the second wave in the country reaches to peaks.
The country shares a large border with India, and health experts say the actual numbers of infections and deaths are likely higher. Medical experts observed it will be difficult to tackle the demand for oxygen supply if the daily infections continue to remain high.
Bangladesh has reported 11K cases, the highest in a day since the start of the pandemic on July 06th. The country has a total of around 1,200 intensive care units (ICU) beds out of 839 in capital city Dhaka. The country has capacity to provide 220 tonnes of liquid oxygen daily but medical experts predict a daily requirement of 230 tonnes of liquid oxygen in the coming days. Government announced a strict lockdown in a bid to stop the spreading of coronavirus. As per the reports, the city of Khulna has become the epicenter for sudden surge of coronavirus in Bangladesh.
Reports saying that graveyards can't cope with the rising number of dead bodies. Adding to that, the country is also facing a crisis in vaccination after India stopped exports of AstraZeneca shots because of its own outbreak in April. Bangladesh has a deal to get 30 million doses from India’s Serum Institute. Bangladesh is looking towards China for vaccines after India halted the exports. Vaccination has been completed for 4 million people out of the 160 million population in the country.
