Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said that he will kill anyone who had illegal drugs. To the rest of the Philippines, it showed his commitment to the battle against narcotics and war against drugs but people in the country were saying different versions.
They blamed the Rodrigo Duterte government for killing innocent people in the name of the drug war. Reportedly, Philippine police have killed 7,884 drug suspects in legitimate anti-drug operations since 2016. Huge rally was conducted by the protesters in Manila before President Duterte’s final nation address on July 26th. They shouted for the step down of Duterte from his office immediately (his term comes to an end by June 2022).
Every nation has its own policy in fighting against illegal drug tacklers in the world. Some nations have in light manner whereas others have targeted with harsh legislations. Drug peddlers and users get death penalty in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Thailand. Cambodia, Laos and Indonesia have been charged with imprisonment and huge penalties. The Philippine drug war is the anti-drug policy and actions of the Philippine government under President Rodrigo Duterte who have taken charge since 2016. He won the election in 2016 by making the promise of eradicating illegal drugs and corruption. It is welcomed by the people but the way he managed to keep his promise is objectionable.
Hundreds of activists took the
streets of Manila despite the threat of the more contagious Delta variant of
the coronavirus, carrying banners criticizing Duterte's rights record and his
handling of the COVID-19 crisis. They accused the Duterte government of
violating human rights and mishandling the pandemic virus. Duterte has dared
the International Criminal Court (ICC) to put him on trial, taunted the court
again, and is saying that he has never denied that he will kill people out to
destroy the country. Aside from blood and death, Duterte’s drug war also
stirred controversy from the deadly execution of anti-drug operations, to
hundreds of recorded abuses by police officials and other authorities.
