Does India have really 40 lakh coronavirus deaths?

Coronavirus broke out in two stages in India and claimed many lives. According to the Department of Health, the pandemic has claimed the lives of 4.14 lakh people since its inception. In reality, the death toll in the country seems to be many times higher.

Recent studies on this topic reveal a number of concerns. Corona deaths in India are 10 times higher than official figures, according to a US team of researchers. It is estimated that 30-47 lakh people in the country have lost their lives to the virus so far. Researchers at Harvard University have published a report on coronavirus conditions and deaths in India. One of them is Arvind Subramanian, a former financial adviser to the Government of India.

They said in their report that the death toll had not been accurately calculated in most parts of India and hence the actual deaths could be much higher than the official figures. It is estimated that between January 2020 and June 2021, 30 to 47 lakh people will die in the country. This is 10 times more than the government estimates. This will be the worst human tragedy in India since independence. The report is completely based on the Civil Registration System (CRS), which tests births and deaths in seven states, blood tests and financial surveys. The report said the estimates were made after studying all the causes of death in the country and comparing them with the deaths a year ago (before the eruption of coronavirus surge). Even the most common deaths before the pandemic were not on record.

It is well known that over the past few months many states have also been revising their pandemic deaths figures. Previously unrecorded deaths are now being identified and uncovered. From these, it is clear that large-scale deaths are not officially recorded. The death rate due to coronavirus in India, on the other hand, is much lower than the world average. As per the report it also raises many suspicions. Meanwhile, the Center has been dismissing these studies from time to time. The government reiterates that the government is highly transparent in data management of coronavirus. The government told Parliament that there were no deaths due to lack of oxygen specifically reported by states and UTs during the second wave of Covid-19. The BJP government pretended to show that everything is normal in India.
