Yogi made SC/ST hostel as Detention Centre

Detention centres are meant to house illegal immigrants after they are declared ‘foreigners’ by tribunals/courts or foreigners who have served their sentence for an offence in India and are awaiting deportation to their home country.

The word Detention Centre made popular in India after the Citizenship Amendment Act passed in December’19. Illegal immigrants came into India through North Eastern states and West Bengal from Bangladesh. These centres were first set up in 2005 in Assam by Tarun Gagoi led Congress government. After pandemic virus eruption in India Detention centres issue ignored.

Yogi Adithyanath government in Uttar Pradesh has given green signal to open a detention centre in the state. The Social Welfare Department in Ghaziabad is in charge of converting SC/ST hostel into the Detention Centre. UP government dared to change into Detention Centre after a go-ahead by the Union Government. The detention centre will house all such detainees, who are foreigners and booked for violating the Passport Act 1987 and Foreigners Act 1946. It will house for the people who finished their sentences and are waiting to get deported to their respective nations.

Ghaziabad detention centre can accommodate 100-120 inmates. It is the 12th Detention Centre in India. Former CM Mayawati demanded a rollback of the decision. UP is in top 5 states in India reported the number of coronavirus cases. When other states changed the hotels and welfare organization buildings into Covid hospitals, UP’s decision will raise many doubts among the political parties.  The state was received 5K cases regularly. Amid of severe corona outbreak, it is questionable to made SC/ST hostel into Detention Centres. The Dr Ambedkar Hostel for SC/ST Students was built 2010-11 during Mayawati’s tenure as CM.
