Covaxin Vs Covishield

Indian government swadeshi developed Covid-19 vaccine seems to be ugly political turn. Indian government has scheduled to roll out coronavirus vaccine starting from next week onwards. Indian Medical regulator DCGI gave its approval to Covaxin and Covishield as emergency use to the people.

The government gave permissions to Bharath Biotech and Serem Institute in making Covid-19 vaccine last year at same period. There are reports that Covaxin has not yet Phase 3 trials. Why the government of India gave approvals to the vaccine without completing its trials?

Congress leaders and Medical experts also raised the similar suspicion on Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin. This raised bitter political uproar and things got heated up all of the sudden. Doubts and suspicions on efficacy of Covaxin results increased when pandemic virus seems to be under control in the country. Shashi Tharoor said that the approval to Covaxin was premature and government was played with lives of the people. Congress demands why protocols modified for Bharat Biotech relating to phase 3 trials. Chairman of Bharat Biotech Dr. Krishna Ella came into the picture to rescue Covaxin.

Dr. Ella said why people not questioned of UK trial. He lashed that some Indian scientists blame Indian scientists. AIIMS Director said that Covaxin is just an ‘emergency situation’ vaccine and can be considered as back-up vaccine. Serum Institute of India (SII)’s Covishield is approved for people aged 18 years and above whereas Bharat Biotech’s vaccine has been approved for those 12 years and above. Both the vaccines have to be taken in two doses. Both the vaccines can be stored at 2–8 degrees Centigrade (household refrigerator temperature). Indian Government is on the way for mass vaccination against the virus that has so far infected over a crore people and killed nearly 1.5 lakh.
