John Cena is an American wrestler and actor who currently
signed with WWE is in news for not good reasons. He accidentally wading into
territorial dispute by mentioning Taiwan as a country. That’s it. Chinese
social media started trolling WWE star for his tongue slip. He is wrestling
with new opponent. John Cena is facing political backlash in China after
calling Taiwan as a country during his film promotion. That caused great
wrestling star to fear and made an apologized video in social media.
He went to Taiwan for the promotion of his new film Furious 9
in May this year. Cena was being interviewed on Taiwanese TV to promote F9, the
new Fast & Furious movie and said in Mandarin language saying that Taiwan
is the first nation can watch “F9”. Chinese fans were irate that he referred to
Taiwan as a country, and not part of China. Taiwan has identity crisis with
China since many years. Taiwan sees
itself as an autonomous democracy and nation but China considers it a Chinese
territory that they will reclaim. Wrestling star struggled in between their
politics. Afterwards Cena was recognized the damage to his words and released
apologized video in same Mandarin.
Cena is not the first star in involving Chinese internal
affairs. In 1993, Richard Gere another actor supported Tibetian movement. He
was banned from hosting Oscars function for supporting Tibet. Hollywood has
maintained silence on politically sensitive issues for safeguarding its
business interests. Fast & Furious 9 smashed through the box office during
its May 21 release in China last weekend, raking in $148 million. China has
largest movie market in 2020 after it touching $3.1 billion as box-office
revenue. The “Fast & Furious” movie has traditionally performed well in
Chinese theatre houses. But wrestling hero John Cena called pathetic for apologizing
to China over Taiwan remark.
