Will the Tokyo Olympics be postponed again?

The Tokyo Summer Olympics were originally to take place from 24th July to 9th August 2020, the event was postponed in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As per new schedule the multi-sport event is scheduled to be held from 23rd July to 8th August 2021. 

Fourth wave of Coronavirus severely hits an island nation. 60% of people in Japan want them to be cancelled, less than three months before the Games are due to open. The coronavirus situation in Japan is getting worse on each passing day.


Number of people in Japan is losing their lives to coronavirus as the country is in its fourth wave. Daily death toll in the country rapidly increased. On April 10th there were 10 daily deaths and the number surged to 121 on May 09th. The number of cases too multiplied thrice in the same period. This led to the collapse of the health care system in Japan. People are getting angry against Japanese government for its failure in handling the coronavirus. Print media advertisements criticizing the government's response to coronavirus have been widely shared in social media.


Japan has managed to inoculate just 2.2% of its 126 million population which is the slowest among other wealthy nations. Japan has procured the largest amount of coronavirus vaccines in Asia in view of the coming Olympic Games. Japan has extended a state of emergency in Tokyo and several other regions until the end of May as it struggles to contain a surge in Covid-19 cases fuelled by new, more contagious variants, with medical staff warning that health services in some areas are on the verge of collapse. Poll conducted at the weekend by TBS News found 65% wanted the Games cancelled or postponed again, with 37% voting to scrap the event altogether and 28% calling for another delay.
