Dharavi is the slum location located in Mumbai. It is considered as Asia’s largest slum area. It is an area of 2.1 square kilometers and around 10 lac people are residing in Dharavi which is one of the most densely populated areas in the world.
It is very hard to imagine how people are surviving in small living area. Eight to 10 people live together in poky 100 sq ft dwellings. About 80% of the residents use community toilets.
When
coronavirus hits Maharashtra everyone is fear of Dharavi situation. As of now,
there are 3 lac cases reported in the state and when it comes to Dharavi around
2500 cases registered. The scale of the measures put in place - a mix of
draconian containment, extensive screening and providing free food to an
out-of-work population - has been extraordinary. Mumbai corporation officials
have perfectly implemented 3T (Trace, Test, Treat) plan in Dharavi.
Health workers are doing early door-to-door screening of patients by wearing personal protective kits. Many Health camps erupted in Dharavi for testing the patients who have symptoms of virus. Those who test positive are moved to local quarantine houses in schools, marriage halls and so on. Govt was implemented lockdown strictly. Free meals and food ration provided to the residents. Voluntary turn up from people and doctors from private hospitals joined in the camps. Awareness among the people in wearing the face masks and following the guidelines strictly are other reasons for containment of virus. Success in Dharavi is inspirational to other slums in the world.
