Sputnik – V is
the name of the first coronavirus vaccine announced by Russian President
Vladimir Putin. He proudly said that trials conducted on his daughter.
Many nations
and experts raised doubts on accuracy of Sputnik – V vaccine. World Health
Organization (WHO) said that Russia’s Sputnik-V is not in the list of approved
medicine companies. But Russia is on preparations to get ready the vaccine into
the market as early as possible. Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF)
marketing Sputnik – V approached Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories.
Dr. Reddy’s
partnered to run clinical trials and distribute Sputnik – V vaccine in India.
But India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has turned down
a proposal from Dry Reddy’s lab to conduct a large trial on Russia’s vaccine
Sputnik – V. The regulator said Dr. Reddy’s to conduct a smaller trial for the
Russia’s Sputnik – V. CDSCO said that data on the safety and immunogenicity on
Sputnik – V is small. The organization also believed that there is no input
available on the vaccine on Indian participants.
CDSCO
decision is setback for Russia’s plan to roll-out the vaccine even before the
full trials are conducted. India is estimated to overtake the US in the next
several weeks to become the country with highest number of positive cases.
Russia is the first country to approve a novel coronavirus vaccine. It was
approved even before any large scale trials were conducted which stirred
concerns over a safety and efficacy of the vaccine.
