The Delta Plus variant is a mutated version of the B.1.617.2 strain, named delta by the World Health Organization (WHO). As per WHO, the strain drove the second wave of infections in India. When more than 80 countries in the world are struggling to control the Delta variant, a new mutated version called Delta Plus has been detected and spread in 9 nations.
Around 200 cases have been detected so far in the world and India has found at least 40 cases of Delta Plus. Earlier samples have been traced in Europe in March 2021 and in India Delta Plus has been detected in 3 states.
Delta Plus is believed to be more infectious but there is no indication yet how Delta Plus is more deadly than other variants. Bur experts warned this variant could trigger the next wave of cases across the world. Delta Plus cases, still low in numbers, are emerging as large parts of India are ending severe lockdowns and restrictions with Covid cases on the decline after a fierce second wave ambushed the nation's health infrastructure in April-May. New variant to account for 90% of new cases in Europe by August-end.
Indian government has termed the Delta Plus variant as a variant of interest and scientists are studying how this variant can escape the immunity of vaccines. Central government gave an alert to the states while cases of Delta Variant increased in the country. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) are in study to examine the potency of Delta Plus variant on pandemic affected persons. They are also researching that existing vaccines can control the Delta Plus variant.
