China wants to step into the EU with different strategies like investments and vaccine policy. China wants to set-up Shanghai based Fudan University in Hungarian capital Budapest. Hungary government defends that Fudan University will raise education standards but citizens are accusing Hungary government of the decision. For the first time since lockdown, thousands gather in #Budapest to protest against plans of Viktor Orbán government to build a campus for Chinese Fudan University in the city.
The cost of construction to be around $1.8 billion, more than Higher Education spent on its entire higher-education system in 2019. Around 10,000 people protest the proposed Fudan university project in the Hungarian capital. People fear that Chinese University will become a source of communist propaganda in Hungary. As per the survey, 2/3rd of the Hungary population has rejected the project. They are in fear that Chinese Fudan University will ignore the country's own curriculum. The proposed new University is ten times bigger than Hungarian Parliament. China would procure the finance to complete the project by the end of 2024.
Opposition parties in the country are threatening
the government to disturb the construction works of the project. Budapest Mayor
Gergely Karacsony moved one step ahead and threatened the government that
streets of the capital city would be renamed with the victims of the Chinese
human rights abuses. Four street signs at the site now bear the names “Free
Hong Kong Road”, “Uygur Martyrs’ Road”, “Dalai Lama Road” and “Bishop Xie
Shiguang Road” referring to a persecuted Chinese Catholic priest. China has
maintained good relations with Hungary in the recent past. Viktor Orbán's
government also criticized the EU for imposing sanctions against China for
violation of human rights. Hungary is the only nation that uses China’s
Sinopharm vaccine in the EU.
