After three months of the discussion with Australian government, Tech giant Facebook take decision to stop Australians from sharing the news and strip the pages of domestic and foreign news outlets. From now onwards, Australians can’t share news on Facebook anymore.
The stand-off comes as Australia's vows to press ahead with the landmark legislation. Facebook has publicly indicated no change in its opposition to a proposed law requiring social media platforms to pay for links to news content and refused to pay advertisement revenue to news outlets. Australian government feels that Facebook action is unnecessary and will damage its reputation in Australia.
Australian government has pledged not to make Covid-19 roll out campaign in Facebook. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has launched a global diplomatic offensive to drum up support for Australia’s proposed law to force Internet giants Facebook and Google to pay media companies for the news content that is published on their platforms. Australia is in process of explaining to various nations about Facebook exploitation and using the local news without paying a single penny. Reportedly, Canada joins with Australia’s anti-Facebook crusade. World leaders blasted the social media giant and accused its decision to block the news. Seeing the outrage on Facebook, Google has decided signing deal with news corporations and local media.
Australia’s battle with Facebook reached to tipping point. As per the study, around 39% of the people in Australia are using Facebook for news but Facebook says only 4% of Australians used our platform for news. In 2019, Google made $4.8 billion revenue through advertising and Facebook made $670 million as revenue. This forced Australian made new legislation for tech giants to pay for news to negotiate fair payment with news companies for using their content. Australia is the first nation that made significant reform to control tech giants who are in worrisome that every nation would follow Australia. Google agreed with Australian legislation and made an agreement with the companies and Facebook not agreed.
