American print media “The New York Times” article will arouse many suspicions and doubts over Chinese integrity. New York Times claims that China is the reason for Mumbai grid failure in October’20.
Maharashtra government was appointed a committee probing on Mumbai’s power outage and confirmed that there was no sabotage behind the blackout of Mumbai. NYT report came on February 28th on same lines that grid failure is not because of humans and suspected there was malware.
As per the NYT report, the group of hackers has likely to have targeted different cities in India amid the border hostilities in 2020 between China and India. The report says that 12 Indian state organizations were identified by Chinese hackers. Chinese linked group RedEcho targets the Indian power sector. Reportedly, it had injected a malware that caused widespread disruptions in 2020. This malware was identified by US based Recorded Future which analyzed online digital threat. This kind of cyber-attacks targeted power utilities and load dispatch centers.
US Congress urges Joe Biden administration to stand by India over Mumbai blackout. This attack was a message to India that claims too hard to accept. The primary reason for power outage was said to be tripping at the load dispatch center in Thane district. State officials suspected grid failure on sabotage angle but not on malware attack way. The report was believed that vulnerable cyber-attack appears to have started well before border clash in Ladakh in May 2020.
