Indian Premiere League (IPL) is the biggest festival for Indian cricket fans and at the same time IPL is biggest money spinner for BCCI. It earned around $93 million from IPL sponsorships. VIVO paid $58 million for 2018 IPL title rights. BCCI total profit from 2018 IPL comes around $265 million. Of Course! The money didn’t go to BCCI pocket directly. It is distributed among 8 franchises in IPL. VIVO penned with BCCI for sponsorship rights for 5 years since 2018. Indian cricket fans and other politicians feel sad on BCCI decision on VIVO. Indian fans created the hashtag like #BoycottIPL in social media and lashed out BCCI attitude.
Fans remember that BCCI stopped to play with Pakistan when the situation in border was grim. BCCI also not allowed PAK players into IPL. Since 2017, it also imposed ban on commentators from PAK. Why BCCI not apply same rule with China sponsors? If BCCI wants to break the contract with VIVO it has to paid $300 million to VIVO which would have been costly to BCCI. In addition to that, BCCI should also face legal challenges from VIVO. It’s all about money that stopped BCCI to break the deal with VIVO. It’s very difficult to get another sponsor like VIVO for BCCI. It has more than 5K crores as per 2018 Balance Sheet and 2K crores in the form of Fixed Deposits. Will the richest cricket body defy Indians for a few million dollars from China?
