New Young Face from Asia fights for Democracy – AGNES CHOW

We saw and heard about Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar (Burma) for her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights. Suu Kyi's struggle is one of the most extraordinary examples of civil courage in Asia in recent decades.

Hong Kong is now facing the similar situation after China was imposed controversial new security law in the country. Agnes Chow is Hong Kong politician, Social activist and co-founder of Demosisto with two others in 2016. 23 year old activist was detained under Hong Kong’s new national security law. She was arrested by police officers on suspicion of collusion with foreign forces on August 10th. Chow was arrested on Monday and was granted bail after 24 hours on Tuesday, with her passport seized, Hong Kong media Sing Tao Daily reported.

In 2014, Chow attended Hong Kong Baptist University, where she studied government and international relations. Chow deferred her final year of university studies to run in the Hong Kong Island by-election. Chow also renounced her British nationality, which was a qualification requirement mandated by the Basic Law. The Umbrella Movement was a great political movement that emerged during the Hong Kong democracy protests of 2014. She was participated in that agitation actively along with other student leaders. Soon after one of Hong Kong’s best-known democracy activists was arrested this week under the national security law imposed on the city by the Chinese government, supporters turned her into a “Mulan”, Chinese folk heroine.

Agnes Chow arrest creates tremors in Japan where Chow, dubbed "Goddess of Democracy," played a key role in the 2014 Umbrella Movement that called for democratic change in the former British colony. Chow arrest in Hong Kong made headlines in Japan. She often delivered her messages to around 500,000 Twitter followers in fluent Japanese. That made stirred up a #FreeAgnes campaign in Twitter which was used by 178K accounts on August 11th. Chow’s popularity in Japan is mainly of her proficiency in Japanese language. She taught herself Japanese by watching TV programmes. Chow said thanks to Japanese people after released on bail in Japanese language.
