There is huge debate going on Hate Speech and Free Speech in India. The term “Hate Speech” is not new to India in political angle but it was so popular after Delhi General Elections in February’20.
Political leaders did their best in targeting opponents in their campaign. Delhi High Court slammed three BJP leaders Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma and police filed FIR against them. Owaisi younger brother made derogatory remarks against Hindu community in 2012 and was detained in jail for some period. Three women authors Sonali Chitalkar, Prerna Malhotra and Monika Arora wrote a book “Delhi Riots: 2020”, The Untold Story on Delhi riots in February this year.
Three Authors of the book |
The book is
supposed to release on September but publisher Bloomsbury announced that it is
no longer publish the book. Bloomsbury is known for Harry Potter books. The
reason that forced Publisher to withdraw from publishing book “Delhi Riots:
2020” is just one poster. Kapil Mishra is the guest of book launch in poster
that caused outrage in Social Media. Kapil Mishra is better known for his hate
speech which delivered a day before the riots. Netizens call for
#BoycottBloomsbury viral in social media against the book. Rajiv Gandhi
government banned Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verse in 1998 claiming the book
contains hate speech. West Bengal Government banned the book of Taslima
Nasreen’s Lajja.
Poster triggers uproar to ban the book |
Without
reading the content in the book how should one demand for ban. Those who made
call for boycott of the Bloomsbury in social media have severely criticized
hate speech of the leaders. They blamed that some leaders misuse freedom of
speech and the same people obstructs the freedom of speech by banning the book.
Who stopped the authors to publish with different name and different publisher? Apart from Kapil Mishra, some section of
people fear of three authors of the book was part of fact finding team on Delhi
Riots. Tastes of literary vary from one to one. Those who criticized hate
speech demand for ban of the book. Freedom of speech misused in either way.
