People remember Sputnik V, which was the first orbital satellite launched by the Soviet Union in 1957 and set off the global space race.
USSR beat the America By launching Sputnik in 1957 in space race. Now, Russian President Vladimir Putin has named ‘Sputnik V’ as the first Covid-19 vaccine and claimed to win vaccine race. Did Russia compromise the necessary steps in order to come up with first Covid-19 vaccine?
The trials
for Sputnik V began on June 18th. Reportedly, Russia has conducted
it’s trials on less than 100 volunteers. As per WHO guidelines, it will take 10
years period to come out effective vaccine. When we see the urgency of today’s
world 10 years period is too long that doesn’t mean to produce the vaccine with
shortcuts. How can the Russia produce the vaccine within 2 months? Though Putin
denied, Russia skips some required procedures to follow in preparing the
vaccine.
Every
vaccine should go through pre-clinical trials on animals and three stages of
testing on humans before it goes out for mass production. It seems that Russia
has not yet started third stage trials on Sputnik V. Putin said regulatory
approval granted for Sputnik V after less than 2 months of human testing. Putin
reiterated that the vaccine gone through all necessary checks. WHO said that
only 6 vaccines have reached Phase 3 of human trials. Sputnik V is not among in
6 vaccines. Russia’s fast track approach in finding the vaccine has left many
doubts to the world.
