Second wave of pandemic virus hits India miserably both in number of cases and fatalities as well. India has recorded more than 2 lakh cases every day since one week. Largest Hindu gathering Kumbh Mela seems to main reason for sudden spike in coronavirus cases in Northern India.
The situation in Uttar Pradesh is quickly getting out of hand. First 14 days of April, the case load increased 7times and from April 13 to 14, they increased 31%. There are currently over 1.5 lakh active cases in the state, making UP one of only three states in India with an active case load higher than a lakh, with Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.
Prime Minister Modi’s
constituency Varanasi is facing cremation problem. As per the data from
graveyards in Varanasi, 50% of covid deaths have not recorded in UP records
officially. Crematoriums and graveyards across the worst hit states have been
stretched thin due to the spike in deaths. Number of bodies brought to
graveyard has increased four times since February. Lodhi crematorium at Delhi
is working 24/7 and staff is doing cremation of dead bodies relentlessly. Kith
and kin of deceased people are struggling to search for place to bury the
bodies. Rituals have taken a backseat as the waiting list increases for the
dead.
People are waiting for their turn at crematoriums hours together. Staff at crematoriums is also worried about the spread of the virus to them. Activists on the ground have said both cases and deaths have been underreported In Uttar Pradesh. Growing the severity of pandemic virus, Modi asked Hindu seers to curtail Kumbh Mela against to earlier plan because of coronavirus rampage. Kumbh Mela began on April 1 and was scheduled to end by the end of April 30. In India, long queues appear at hospitals for vaccine and at burial grounds for rituals.
