ISKP has claimed responsibility for the deadly suicide attacks outside Kabul airport. American President Joe Biden warned that the U.S. will hunt ISIS and make Islamic group pay for the brutal attack.
Almost 170 people including 13 US military personnel were killed in the Kabul blast. ISKP is also known as The Islamic State in Khorasan Province (ISKP-K), the armed group was formed in 2014 by breakaway fighters of the Pakistan Taliban and fighters from Afghanistan. At its height the group numbered about 3,000 fighters. People in Afghanistan are suffering from both Taliban and ISKP. Though they have similar opinions on implementing Islamic law, Taliban and ISIS have some major differences.
The Taliban is facing troubles from
Al Qaeda and ISIS in ruling Afghanistan. It is shocking that ISIS made its
presence just a few weeks after Taliban completed the takeover of Afghanistan.
It has strong roots in northeastern Afghanistan but set up sleeper cells in
Kabul and other provinces. The attack seems to expose security challenges for
Taliban controlled Afghanistan. After the 9/11 attacks, the US invaded
Afghanistan and toppled the government to drive out Al Qaeda. Even after 2
decades, the United States of America failed to eliminate terror outfits from
Afghanistan. As per the reports, ISIS in Afghanistan has the capacity to launch
large scale attacks against the Western nations.
ISIS has strong differences with
the Taliban. ISIS is accusing the Taliban of abandoning Jihad and the
battlefield in favor of a negotiated peace settlement. Reportedly, it opposed
Taliban governance though both have a history of fighting turf wars. ISIS has
recruited militants mainly from Taliban defectors. Both ISIS and Al Qaeda may
resume their terrorist activities after the Taliban get into power in
Afghanistan. As per UN report, around 10K jihadi fighters back to Afghanistan
after US and NATO forces exist. They are mainly from Russia, Pakistan and
Xinjiang province in China. Both Al Qaeda and ISIS are bitter enemies and fight
against each other in Syria and Afghanistan.
