Taliban came to know the ground reality after taking control of Afghanistan. They took over Afghanistan within 11 days and stunned the world. Many of the civilians left the nation including former President Ashraf Ghani in the wake of Taliban rout.
The insurgent turned rulers will face a new challenge of running the nation. As per UNSC report, Taliban’s annual revenues ranged between $300 million to $1.5 billion per annum and mainly they are getting revenue from opium trade, illegal mining and extortion & taxes. The Afghan country's budget is five times bigger than the Taliban's economy. Now, they are trying to eradicate the bad image for foreign funds.
First challenge they would likely
face is liquid cash to run the economy. Even though the terrorist group is
ultra-rich, they need more money to run the economy in Afghanistan. This is the
main concern for the Taliban. Where will these funds come from? 47% of the
Afghan population is below poverty. 43% of Afghan GDP is made up of foreign
aid. 75% of the Afghan government’s budget came from foreign aid mainly from
the U.S. The United States of America has frozen $9.5 billion of Afghan reserve
funds that made them keep cash away from Taliban. Several western nations would
follow America in this regard. Germany has suspended the proposed development
aid of $500 million after the Taliban took charge.
The International Monetary Fund
(IMF) is denying Taliban access to Afghan reserves which amounted to $440
million. To impress the West, the Taliban is now talking about human rights and
freedom. It seems that Western nations, International Financial agencies might
impose strict restrictions for the resumption of funding. Restrictions include
freedoms especially for women. Most of the Taliban have known how to operate
weapons but complete zero knowledge on administration. Taliban desperately need
some well-educated people to get funds from foreign nations with their skills.
More than 4 million people were displaced during the Afghan war. Most people
who have qualified for the job were left the nation due to fear of hardcore
Islamic governance.
