India has summoned Canada’s top diplomat to protest at comments by Justin Trudeau on recent mass protests by farmers in the country. The diplomatic move is expected from the government after Canadian PM Trudeau called clashes between police and farmers ‘concerning’.
No one expected the reaction from Canadian Prime Minister because farmers issue is internal matter of India. Canadian High Commissioner Nadir Patel has summoned on “interference” in domestic affairs. Reportedly, India warns on Canada’s involvement in Indian issues would damage the ties between two nations.
Trudeau did not take back from his comments on farmer protests. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his views after police used water cannon and teargas to disperse demonstrators. He addressed Sikh Community in Canada and said that Canada always be there to defend the rights of peaceful protest. He is the first world leader responded on going farmer protests against new legislation bills. Officials from External Affairs mentioned that Canadian leader was ill-informed on protests. There is political reason behind the response of Canadian Prime Minister. Sikh Community in Canada is in a strong position of influential in elections.
The Sikh Community in Canada may comprise 2% of country’s total population. In 2019 Canadian Federal Election as many as 18 Sikhs were elected to Canadian Parliament and 13 belongs to Trudeau’s Liberal Party. He included 3 of them into his cabinet. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is appeasing Sikh community voters. The New Democratic Party (NDP) has won 24 seats in last election is led by Jagmeet Singh. He demands Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to made statement on farmer protests in Delhi but not just comment. That forced the Indian government to summon Canadian Envoy.
