Trump’s last hit on Turkey and warning to India

45 days before he leaves the White House, President of United States Donald Trump takes crucial decision on Turkey. United States took decision on unilateral sanctions against Turkey, for acquisition of Russian S-400 air defense systems.

Russia called US sanctions as arrogance and Italy deny US sanctions on Turkey. Greece welcomes US action against Turkey. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited on November 16^th along with his wife. He didn’t meet any official during his secret visit and a month later US imposed sanctions on Turkey.

It may be recalled that the ground-to-air defenses system was acquired by Turkey from Russia in mid-2019. Turkey is NATO member and this defense collaboration with Russia is unacceptable. US consider defense deal between Russia and Turkey is ‘Incompatible as per NATO policies. How these sanctions turned as warning to India? India has also inked similar deal with Russia and is set to receive S-400 air defense system from Moscow in 2021.

But the acquisition of S-400 system is very important for India to counter attacks in a two-front war. The sanctions imposed by the US on Turkey have made India cautious and New Delhi is closely monitoring the decision taken by US administration. Donald Trump has maintained very health relations with India and the country are expects the similar from new President Joe Biden. It is likely that Biden would continue with the stand taken by Trump as far as S-400 deal is concerned but it may happen that the new president may change his stand over new deals.
