Why China imported rice from India?

Yes! Arrogant dragon is facing severe food crisis in the country. China is facing scarcity of rice which is staple food for the people. China is looking at neighbors for the getting rice to their people.

Obviously! India is the only option for China. It is the first since 3 decades China to import rice from India. Beijing has previously avoided Indian rice citing quality issues. Now, it is unavoidable situation to China for Indian rice. China is the world’s biggest importer of rice while India is the largest exporter. Amid of long standoff between India and China, India is exporting rice at a much discounted price.

China imports 100000 tons of rice from India. Why it is happened when Chinese media claims “Bumper Harvest”? In August President Xi Jinping wanted to stop waste food. Chinese Social Media did huge campaign called “Clean Plate” saying to avoid waste. Responding to Xi call, the catering association of the central city of Wuhan is already taking measures to limit the number of portions restaurant patrons can order. Some restaurants are suggesting the customers weigh themselves before ordering. Wuhan virus followed by heavy floods have hits food supplies in China.

Indian traders are going to export 100,000 tons of broken rice of non-basmati for $300 per each ton. China’s traditional suppliers like Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Pakistan have raised their prices owing to limited surplus supplies for export. These countries were quoting at least $30 per ton more than the Indian prices. It is not first time that food crisis happened in China. Millions of people died of starved to death because of famine in 60’s under the leadership of Mao. After that food processing was the main priority for China. One of the very few economic gains for India amid the coronavirus pandemic has been the exponential growth in the production and demand for rice in the first six months of the financial year.
